Sit at the distance specified in your light's instructions. The advertised lux figure applies to a particular measurement position. Moving the lamp to the far end of a desk changes the light reaching you, even if the panel still looks bright.
Why distance belongs beside the lux number
Lumie's bright-light FAQs explain that light intensity falls with distance and that a lux claim needs a distance to be meaningful. When comparing products, write those two figures on the same line. A close-range specification and a more distant specification should not be treated as identical setups.
Measure from your normal sitting position
- Place the lamp on a stable surface.
- Adjust your chair to the position you actually use.
- Measure from your face to the light panel, following the manual's measurement guidance.
- Check the angle and height against the setup diagram.
- Repeat the check after moving the lamp or changing chairs.
Do not measure only the distance from the lamp's base to the edge of your desk. The panel may be tilted or raised, and your face may be well behind that edge.
Common problems on a desk
A large monitor can hide part of the panel. A lamp placed beside a printer may be much farther away than it seemed in a product photo. A low shelf can prevent the intended angle. These are good reasons to test the proposed position before ordering, using a tape measure and an object roughly the size of the lamp.
What if the recommended position feels awkward?
Rearrange the workspace or choose a model that fits it better. Do not assume that sitting farther away for longer is an approved substitute. Check whether the manufacturer provides an alternative setup, or ask for help. Comfort and a repeatable position are useful buying criteria.
Should I stare directly at the lamp?
Use the orientation in the instructions. The practical aim is a usable arrangement alongside your normal seated activity, not a staring exercise. If you find yourself leaning into the light or turning your head towards it continuously, recheck the setup.
