Portable light therapy lamps: what to check before you buy

A packed travel bag with a camera and a lantern

A portable light therapy lamp is not necessarily battery powered. “Portable” may simply mean small enough to move, fold or pack. Before choosing a compact lamp for a second home, hotel or shared workspace, check how it is powered and how it needs to be positioned.

Separate three different features

  • Compact: the lamp takes up less room.
  • Folding: its stand or cover changes position for storage.
  • Rechargeable: it contains a battery designed for use away from a socket.

A product can have the first two features without the third. USB-shaped connectors also do not, by themselves, establish compatibility with a phone charger or power bank. Use only the supply arrangements approved in the manual.

Will it work where you are staying?

Think about the room rather than just your suitcase. Is there a stable table close to a socket? Can you sit at the specified distance? Will the panel be blocked by a laptop? A smaller lamp can be easy to pack but still need a deliberate setup once you arrive.

Check electrical compatibility before travelling

Read the input rating on the supplied adapter and the manufacturer's instructions for the destination. A plug adapter changes the plug shape; do not assume that it changes the voltage. If the documentation is unclear, ask the supplier before using the lamp abroad. Keep the approved cable and adapter together when packing.

Protect the panel and controls

Follow the folding instructions instead of forcing a hinge to close. Let the lamp cool if the manual requires it, keep liquids separate and prevent heavy objects pressing against the light surface. A protective stand or cover is useful, but it is not evidence that the product can withstand any baggage conditions.

Where DAYARC Mini fits

Mini is a compact, mains-powered lamp with a folding stand. It is not rechargeable. The manufacturer's TheraLite product information describes the underlying lamp design; the DAYARC page explains the current UK offer. Check that offer and its delivery estimate before ordering for a trip.

Is a travel lamp a jet-lag treatment?

Portability does not establish a personalised jet-lag schedule. Travel across time zones changes the timing question, so do not simply copy your home routine without appropriate guidance. For a regular home setup, compare Mini with Rise before deciding that smaller is always preferable.
